Over the next few weeks, we\u2019ll be sharing resources on voting (particularly the great resources created by young people!)\u00a0and other ways to participate in the political process.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.studentenergy.org\/posts\/996-vote-for-climate-action-a-clean-energy-transition-in-2019#Resources\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click to see our list so far.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hear repeatedly from Student Energy\u2019s Canadian youth network that you are deeply concerned about climate change and our current unsustainable energy system, but sometimes feel powerless in shifting large institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are an eligible young voter who wants to urge Canada to take action at a scale and pace that matches the urgency of the climate crisis, here are<\/span><b>\u00a0three good reasons<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0why you should vote in this year\u2019s election:<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>1. \u00a0\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YOUNG PEOPLE ARE NOW THE LARGEST GROUP OF VOTERS IN CANADA<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2030\" src=\"http:\/\/studentenergy.org\/site\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Vote-for-Climate-Action-a-Clean-Energy-Transition-in-2019-300x161.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"161\" \/><\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the upcoming Canadian federal election \u2013 for the first time in 151 years \u2013 Millennial and Generation Z voters will form the largest voting bloc in the country. We have an unprecedented opportunity to bring climate change to the top of the political agenda.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, young\u00a0people have historically had low turnout rates in elections. However, contrary to popular belief, this is not because young people don\u2019t care about politics. A new<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaracanada.com\/research\/active-citizenship\/you-have-our-attention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0shows that young people might actually be the most politically engaged generation. From discussing politics with their peers, to having a favourable view of democratic institutions, to attending meetings and rallies, young Canadians are taking civic engagement seriously. This year, let\u2019s turn out at the ballot box too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>2.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">THIS ELECTION COULD BE THE TURNING POINT FOR CLIMATE ACTION<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><b><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2053\" src=\"http:\/\/studentenergy.org\/site\/assets\/uploads\/2019\/09\/Vote-for-Climate-Action-a-Clean-Energy-Transition-in-2019-1-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/>Let\u2019s be clear: Right now, Canada is not on track.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have a crucial opportunity on October 21st to let our elected representatives know that we need to raise the level of ambition on climate action.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent survey by Abacus Data shows that public support for climate action among Canadians is far higher and more widespread than previously thought, especially for renewable energy policy. We\u2019ve seen the same in Student Energy and City Hive\u2019s pan-Canadian<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/sites\/www.nrcan.gc.ca\/files\/energy\/pdf\/GenEnergy\/2017%20Youth%20Voices%20Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Youth Voices Report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: there is broad consensus among youth that we need to increase investment in renewable R&amp;D, provide more pathways to clean energy jobs, and raise the level of ambition in setting and meeting emissions targets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Voting in this election is one of the tools we can use to translate the incredible momentum young climate activists are building into tangible policies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>3.\u00a0<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">YOUNG PEOPLE CAN BRING NEW VOTERS TO THE POLLS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Young people across the country are engaging their peers, their parents, and underrepresented communities to make sure that more voices are represented in the political process than ever before.
