{"id":11247,"date":"2022-04-21T16:27:16","date_gmt":"2022-04-21T20:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/studentenergy.org\/?p=11247"},"modified":"2022-04-21T17:58:53","modified_gmt":"2022-04-21T21:58:53","slug":"a-climate-activists-guide-to-earth-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/studentenergy.org\/a-climate-activists-guide-to-earth-day\/","title":{"rendered":"A Climate Activist&#8217;s Guide to Earth Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\">What is greenwashing?<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Greenwashing<\/strong> refers to when companies and other organizations attempt to cultivate a &#8216;climate friendly&#8217; or environmentally responsible public image, without taking meaningful strides toward climate action.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\">Greenwashing and Earth Day<\/h3>\n<p>Beginning in 1970, Earth Day was conceived in response to a massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, to galvanize collective action for environmental protection.<\/p>\n<p>Having one day to mark an important issue is useful &#8211; it creates opportunities for advocates to gather support, for media to amplify coverage of the climate crisis, and for people to reflect on issues that they may not usually have the time or space to.<\/p>\n<p>But along with meaningful climate action, Earth Day has also become rife with corporate greenwashing. Let&#8217;s take a look at how to spot it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\">climate committments without follow-through<\/h3>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Many companies and organizations use high-visibility days like Earth Day to make announcements, like setting net-zero or sustainability targets, new funds for climate action, etc. But sometimes, these announcements come with <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">no clear pathway to how they will achieve these goals.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h5 class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\" style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Questions to ask:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Is there a <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">publicly visible<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> plan for implementation?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Are there <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">short-term<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> and <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">long-term<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> checkpoints?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Are the climate pledges accompanied by <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">sufficient funding<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> to achieve them?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Do the pledges have plans for <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">direct emissions reductions<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, or do they rely on <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">offsets <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">to meet their goals?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Is there a <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">person or department<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> accountable to achieving these goals?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Tokenization<\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> of grassroots activists<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Earth Day can be a valuable opportunity for activists to have their work amplified across diverse platforms to reach wide audiences. However, it is a reality that companies derive <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">significant social capital<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> from proximity to social movements, and it may not always be a fair exchange.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\" class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\" style=\"margin-bottom: -3px;\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Questions to ask:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Are companies <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">compensating activists<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> for their time doing interviews, social media takeovers, or sharing written pieces?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Are companies doing something more than profiling leaders? Are people being given real <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">funding and resources<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> for their projects?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Are companies telling the stories of environmental leaders with their <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">consent<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">, and <strong>&#8216;<\/strong><\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">passing the mic<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>&#8216;<\/strong> whenever possible?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\" style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">launching new <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">&#8216;green&#8217; <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">products<\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Many corporations see Earth Day as a prime opportunity to launch or increase visibility around a new &#8216;green&#8217; product or initiative, from sustainable fashion lines to new skincare lines to products made from recycled materials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Unfortunately, sometimes these &#8216;green&#8217; products make up a tiny percentage of the company&#8217;s overall production cycle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5 style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\" class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Questions to ask:<\/span><\/h5>\n<ul>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">What <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">percentage <\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">of the company&#8217;s overall product line or output do these &#8216;green&#8217; products take up?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Does the sustainable product appropriately <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"><strong>replace<\/strong> <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">an unsustainable product, or is it just additional?<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Has the company committed to full <\/span><strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">supply chain transparency<\/span><\/strong><span class=\"JsGRdQ\"> for all their products?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"_04xlpA direction-ltr align-start para-style-body\" style=\"color: #317db2; margin-bottom: -3px;\"><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">Spotting <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">genuine <\/span><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">corporate action<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span class=\"JsGRdQ\">It can be difficult to separate fact from fiction when it comes to Earth Day committments, but recognizing organizations that are walking the walk can help put pressure on those that need to go further.
